Using Your HSA or FSA at OsteoSmart

Our OsteoSmart services are self-pay. Patients often ask whether Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) can be used for bone-health services. In some cases, HSA/FSA funds can be applied toward services that are prescribed to evaluate, support, or treat a documented medical condition, depending on the rules of your specific plan.

Conditions such as osteoporosis, osteopenia, low bone mineral density, fall-risk, chronic musculoskeletal pain, and pelvic floor dysfunction are diagnosable medical concerns. However, each plan makes its own determinations, and eligibility is not guaranteed, even with a diagnosis or a Letter of Medical Necessity.

Approval is always determined by your plan administrator, not by OsteoSmart.

Conditions That May Support HSA/FSA Use

Certain diagnoses may allow for bone-health and strength-related services to be considered by some plans, including:

  • Osteoporosis or osteopenia
  • Low bone mineral density (including metabolic bone concerns)
  • High fracture or fragility risk
  • Post-fracture strength rebuilding
  • Chronic lower-back or spinal pain
  • Degenerative spinal or postural issues impacting mobility
  • Balance instability or gait impairment contributing to fall-risk
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction affecting stability, mobility, or continence
  • Age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia) affecting function and safety

Examples of OsteoSmart Services That Could Be Considered by Some HSA/FSA Plans

Approval varies widely. Even when documentation is provided, plans may still decline coverage. The following services are sometimes recognized only when a provider determines that they are medically necessary for a diagnosed condition and documentation meets your plan’s requirements:

Examples of qualifying clinical uses include:

Echolight REMS Bone Density Scans (Initial & Follow-Ups)

Used to evaluate, diagnose, or monitor low bone density, metabolic bone concerns, fragility risk, or osteoporosis progression.

Office Visits & Bone-Health Assessments

Used to document a bone-health diagnosis, establish a care plan, review gait or balance issues, or track clinical progress related to fracture risk.

LIMFA Therapy

Used as part of treatment for osteoporosis/osteopenia.

BioDensity Strength Sessions

To address skeletal loading needs tied to bone loss, strength deficits affecting fracture risk, or progression of osteoporosis/osteopenia.

PelviPower Sessions

Integrated into treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction impacting continence, stability, mobility, or fall-risk due to weakness in core or hip support.

AccuFit Neuromuscular Stimulation

Used to address functional muscle deficits such as poor spinal support, post-fracture weakness, compromised posture, gait impairment, or fall-risk related to core instability.

Targeted Strength & Balance Programs

Applied to treatment of diagnosed gait instability, fall-risk, restricted mobility after fracture, or mobility limitations associated with osteoporosis or osteopenia.

Bone-Health Coaching & Lifestyle Interventions

Delivered only as part of a documented clinical care plan aimed at improving a diagnosed bone-health condition, reducing fracture risk, or addressing metabolic bone concerns. Not for general lifestyle improvement.

Clinically Prescribed Supplements

Recommended strictly to treat a documented nutrient deficiency, supported by diagnostic evidence and deemed medically necessary within a care plan.

What Is Typically Not Eligible

To help set clear expectations, the following categories are generally not recognized by HSA/FSA plans:

  • Services used exclusively for prevention, general wellness, or fitness
  • Strengthening devices used for athletic performance or aesthetic goals
  • PelviPower, BioDensity, AccuFit, or LIMFA without a qualifying diagnosis
  • Coaching/lifestyle services not tied to a medically necessary treatment plan
  • Supplements without proof of deficiency or clinical necessity
  • Any service where the plan interprets documentation as “wellness” rather than treatment

How to Use Your HSA or FSA at OsteoSmart

  1. Schedule a Visit & Receive a Diagnosis

You meet with our bone-health team for a full evaluation using Echolight REMS and functional assessments. We confirm your bone-health diagnosis and outline a treatment plan.

  2. Pay with Your HSA/FSA Card or Request Receipts

You can use your HSA/FSA debit card at the time of service. Or pay out-of-pocket and submit receipts. We can provide itemized invoices with all required medical information if requested.

  3. Submit Documentation If Required

Some plans require receipts or a Letter of Medical Necessity. OsteoSmart can prepare this when appropriate for your diagnosis as requested.

  4. Plan Ahead for Ongoing Bone-Health Needs

Review your long-term bone-health goals: scans, therapy cycles, strengthening programs and set next year’s FSA/HSA contributions to match.

When to Consider Using FSA Funds

Because FSAs follow a use-it-or-lose-it policy:

  • Late in the year: Apply remaining funds to bone scans, PelviPower, AccuFit, BioDensity, or LIMFA if you’ve been delaying treatment.
  • Early in the year: Plan multi-session programs or diagnostics if you expect to reach your contribution limit.
  • After meeting your deductible: Use remaining benefits before the plan resets.

Why Use HSA or FSA for Bone Health & Osteoporosis Care?

Benefits for Your Health

  • You address low bone density, osteoporosis, or fracture risk earlier, instead of waiting until a bone loss or fracture forces intervention.
  • You invest in evidence-based, non-pharmaceutical approaches that support bone remodeling, metabolic bone health, and strength—rather than relying solely on medication or “wait and watch.”
  • You improve long-term mobility, decrease fall risk, build functional strength, and protect your skeletal system—not just treat symptoms.
  • You create a proactive bone-health baseline, so changes can be monitored consistently and safely throughout life.

Benefits for Your Budget

  • HSA and FSA funds are pre-tax, so you pay using dollars that go further than normal income.
  • You can plan and budget for multi-session therapies like PelviPower, AccuFit, BioDensity, or LIMFA Therapy.
  • You can use FSA dollars that would otherwise expire at year-end toward medically necessary bone-health services.
  • When you combine these savings with OsteoSmart’s prevention-first model (reducing fracture risk, improving strength, and limiting costly injuries), the financial case becomes even stronger.
